Current EU Standards and Regulations at a Glance
New EU regulations, such as the NIS 2 Directive and the EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA), present manufacturers with new challenges. Mobile machinery requires effective protection against cyber attacks by 2027 at the very latest, requiring design changes and new development architectures.

EU Regulation (EU) 2019/2144 – R155 and R156
The EU Regulation on the type approval of motor vehicles, their trailers, and their systems has been in force since 2021. The regulation was expanded to include “Cybersecurity and Cybersecurity Management System” (UN R155) – Scope: M, N, O, as well as “Software Update and Software Update Management System” (UN R156), among other provisions.
EU NIS-2 – EU 2022/2555
The EU NIS 2 Directive, which has been in force since January 16, 2023, aims to increase the overall level of cybersecurity in the EU and to strengthen the resilience of companies and organizations against cyber attacks (business processes, IT, and OT). It specifies strict requirements and a high level of security, especially for sectors such as transport and digital infrastructure.
EU RED EU 2014/53 – Enhanced in 2018, 2022, and 2023
Since August 2025, this standard has created a legal framework for placing radio equipment and IoT devices on the EU market. It also covers cybersecurity considerations that define a baseline level of protection for network protection, personal data and privacy protection, and fraud prevention.
EU Machinery Regulation 2023/1230/EU
From January 2027, machine manufacturers must comply with standardized, mandatory safety requirements when designing and developing their machines. In particular, safety functions must not be compromised by cyber attacks.
CRA EU Cyber Resilience Act – EU 2024/2847
Covers products with digital elements (hardware, software, or IIoT solutions with data processing). From December 2027, machines must fulfill the strict cybersecurity requirements set out in the EU Cyber Resilience Act throughout the entire product lifecycle. The EU Cyber Resilience Act stipulates that elements such as risk analyses and security-by-design are relevant components, even from the development stage onward.
